Role of nt intervention chief quietly scrapped in last week's vote
"While we were able to confirm the changes made to our approach to the issue of Nt-linked disease in 2013, we did so at the recommendation of the Government's National Commission on the Nt-Disease (NCCN) in consultation with industry representatives and the Department of Health. We have now removed our own advice on this topic from our submission as the recommendation of this panel."
Mr O'Grady added there was now "no longer any justification for the Government to insist on a change in its treatment recommendations for the disease in this way".
He said the government's policy of "no change" is based on a "totally inadequate" assessment of risks, which has produced "no evidence-based recommendations for treatment" for dengue and chikungunya.
Dr Paul Watson, chairman of the NCCN, said his group and the UK's medical charity, Oxfam, were concerned by the decision to withdraw the NCCN report as well as "the lack of clarity from the Government" on the process by which it would be brought up to date on its advice.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning, Dr Watson said, "It's a significant loss to the public."
