Woman jailed for nursing home theft

A mother-of-three found guilty of stealing from a private nursing home was jailed for two and a half years today.

Karen Lee, 49, was found guilty of six counts of theft under $5,000 - the most serious for the offence of possession of stolen goods.

Judge Charles O'Regan set her sentencing at 3am on Friday and told Lee he needed to think about her long term welfare as well as dealing with the past.

Lee, of Tauranga, was sentenced by the judge today after pleading guilty on January 30 last year to nine charges against her from December 2010 through April 2013.

Karen Lee, 49, of Tauranga, was found guilty of stealing from a private nursing home in November 2012.

The court heard Lee bought two nursing homes, one in Tauranga and the other in Christchurch, from a person she knew only through the mail-order company Gourmet.

She told police she sold a unit at the Christchurch home because "she was getting bored with it".

Her two-year-old daughter, who was not in her care when she took care of the nursing home, left the home, and her husband who lived with her told police they had heard screams.

Police raided the home in July last year after receiving information that there had been an ongoing theft.

Lee gave police a number of details and told them she was desperate to find out what had happened to the nursing home.
